Chemical evolution of cosmic cloudsReaction rate characteristics of interstellar matter were studied by the reaction of hydrogen cyanide and molecular hydrogen at about 1000 K at an HCN to H2 ratio of 1 to 100 to simulate the large excess of cosmic hydrogen. It was found that HCN decays with a half life of about 20 hours and that a large surface increases the reaction rate as a function of temperature. Reaction rates may be considerable increased by energetic processes that produce free radicals and ions.
