The solar corona and the solar windA stellar corona is an extended atmospheric region that is maintained at a significantly higher temperature than that of the stellar photosphere by nonthermal energy input. The solar corona stands as a prototype for all stellar coronas and is a prime example of a stellar atmosphere in which nonthermal processes predominate. Nonthermal processes are those in which the local flux of energy bears no direct relation to the internal energy of the gas or the quality of the radiation the gas emits and absorbs. Observations of the solar corona and the solar wind were surveyed and are presented.
