An overview of several rain and attenuation modelsThe key features of the Rice-Holmberg, Dutton-Dougherty, Global, Lin, and Piecewise Uniform Rain Rate models for estimation of cumulative attenuation statistics on Earth-space millimeter paths are summarized. The models provide either rain rate statistics or attenuation statistics, which can be related by use of the specific attenuation and the effective path length relation. The effective path length is defined. The advantages and disadvantages of each model for specific applications are discussed. The Global model is recommended as the design tool for predicting propagation effects in Earth-space communication systems.
