The utilization of satellite passive microwave sensors to monitor synoptic scale rainfallA microwave imaging sensor, built for flight on the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft, is discussed. Major elements of the sensor development program are summarized as background for planning a data archival program useful for climate research.
