State of the art: Design for noise IThe engineering management strategy involved in designing helicopters to meet a noise requirement is discussed. A different perspective is given on how designs were accomplished in the past, how a new design would be carried out today, and how knowledge gained through acoustics R&D will have two important effects. It will lead to invention of quieter features to be incorporated, and it will improve the ability to predict accurately the noise levels of new designs before they are built. Each of these effects changes the basic design process.
