Structural assessment of ultralightweight compositesThe potential weight savings of advanced ultralightweight (ULW) materials were investigated using the F/A-18 and 747 as baseline aircraft. Weight savings were calculated using a weight ratio methodology. Material properties used in the analysis were those projected for 1993 ULW production materials. The study results indicated that these ULW materials could save 30 percent airframe weight for both baseline aircraft studied.
