Tethered Satellite Investigations of the Ionosphere and Lower ThermosphereThe ability to resolve horizontal structures in the state variables of the lower thermosphere would considerably advance our understanding of this critical region of the geospace environment. Such measurements can only be obtained from a tethered satellite, where atmospheric drag on the very long tether is compensated by reboost of the mother vehicle. Such an arrangement could presently be accomplished using the space shuttle. Here we describe the rationale for consideration of such an undertaking and describe the known technologies that are required.
