Inhibition of the ablation rate of graphite by gaseous chlorine.Investigation of the inhibiting effect of gaseous chlorine on the ablation rate of graphite. It is shown that small amounts of chlorine gas, when present in a supersonic high-temperature air environment, can inhibit the ablation rate of graphite and depress its surface temperature below that measured in pure air. The ablation inhibition performance of chlorine is presented in graphs in terms of mass loss rate and surface temperature depression as a function of chlorine concentration.
