On the field anomaly of near wakes in a collisionless plasma.A variational approach is presented for determining the electric field induced by charge separation in the near wake of a large negatively charged body moving at mesothermal speeds in a tenuous plasma. It is shown that the presence of a potential well in the wake is due to the charge separation resulting from the unequal mass motions with which the ambient electrons and ions move into the wake.
