An evaluation of the NASA scientific and technical information systemThe best assessment of a scientific and technical information system is obtained from users. NASA has conducted system evaluation studies by talking with those the system is intended to serve - engineers and scientists working in their professional roles. The purpose was to assess the usefulness of the present system and to identify areas and ways in which the system can be made more effective. Emphasis was placed on NASA's announcement and current awareness media, its publication program, and its interactive retrieval system (RECON). The results show that the system is responsive to users' needs in most areas. Specific areas for improvement are identified and the steps NASA has taken are outlined. The major effect was a vastly improved communication with the users regarding what is available and how these resources can assist in solving information problems.
