Variations of temporal, spectral and angular radar backscattering coefficient of vegetationResults of an experimental program is reviewed which over the past five years has succeeded in documenting the variations of the radar backscattering coefficient of a variety of crop types as a function of time, signal frequency (1-18 GHz), angular range (nadir to 80 deg) and polarization (HH, VV and HV). The systems were the microwave active spectrometers (MAS); one MAS system covers the 1-8 GHz band and the other system covers the 8-18 GHz band. Each MAS system was mounted on a mobile truck-mounted boom and was operated by a computer controller. To date, these two systems have acquired over 3 million data points from agricultural crops, bare ground and trees.
