The role of remote sensing in the building of the interstate highway systemThe construction of 68,397 km of interstate highways in the United States, initiated 20 years ago, was examined in regard to remote sensing techniques used. Many of the tools utilized today to locate and design highways were unknown when the program was begun. An overview is presented of the changing role remote sensing has played and continues to play in this vast project.
