Stress analysis study in cooled radial inflow turbineWith increased turbine inlet temperatures, numerical methods of thermal and stress analysis are becoming more valuable in the design of air-cooled turbines. This paper presents a study of the stresses associated with different cooling patterns in a radial inflow turbine rotor. The finite element method is used in the stress calculations taking into consideration centrifugal, thermal and aerodynamic loading. The effects of temperature distribution and the presence of internal cooling passages are discussed.
