Electrostatic and electromagnetic gyroharmonic emissions due to energetic electrons in magnetospheric plasmaThe paper derives the growth rates and growth lengths of the electrostatic emission for spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous energetic electrons, and numerically evaluates the growth rate and growth length spectra for several parameter sets representative of magnetospheric plasmas. In addition, the growth rates are derived for the case of electromagnetic emission modeled by the ordinary mode. The numerical results of the electromagnetic and electrostatic cases are compared with observations made by satellites in the earth's magnetosphere. It is concluded that the electrostatic gyroharmonic excitation is possible without the cold composition of plasma which is often postulated in the existing literature.
