A unique facility for V/STOL aircraft hover testingThe paper discusses the Navy's XFV-12A tethered hover testing capabilities utilizing NASA's Impact Dynamic Research Facility (IDRF) at Langley. The facility allows for both static and dynamic tethered hover test operations to be undertaken with safety. The installation which consists of the 'Z' system (tether), restraint system, static tiedowns and the control room and console, is presented in detail. Among the capabilities demonstrated were the ability to recover the aircraft anytime during a test, to rapidly and safely define control limits, and to provide a realistic environment for pilot training and proficiency in VTOL flight.
