Acceleration of energetic ions at the earth's bow shockA simple analytical solution is presented which incorporates many of the processes believed to be important in the acceleration of the 'diffuse' component of energetic ions at the earth's bow shock, and which can account for many of the characteristics observed for these events. The solution can account for the observed spectral shape, the observed spatial dependence of the intensity, and the observed magnitude and spatial dependence of the anisotropy.
