Collisionless shocks and upstream waves and particles - Introductory remarksA qualitative account is presented of collisionless shock theory in relation to the problem of upstream waves and particles. Particular attention is given to parallel shocks in high-beta plasmas, the relation of upstream phenomena to local shock structure, and Fermi acceleration.
