A study of optically contacted quartz at cryogenic temperaturesOptical contacting as a method of joining the quartz components of the instruments for the Gravity Probe-B experiment is evaluated. The strength of the bond between optically contacted fused quartz surfaces at liquid helium temperature was investigated. A test apparatus which can be used for making measurements of the tensile strength of these bonds was designed. Results of the tensile pull tests are given and the reliability of such bonds analyzed.
