Single point random modal test technology application to failure detectionFrequency response function data, normally acquired as a data base for use in development of empirically based mode shapes, has additional utility. Comparison and analysis of frequency response function data sets obtained prior to and after environmental tests of an Orbiter body flap have enabled identification of structural damage that was not detected by conventional visual, X-ray, and ultrasonic inspections. The analyses and conclusions reported demonstrate that specific damaged areas within a relatively complex structure identified on a timely basis.
