Long range surface plasmons in birefringent mediaThe propagation properties of surface plasmon polaritons guided by thin metal films bounded by birefringent media are investigated. For the very thin (less than or equal to 150 A) films required to produce long propagation distances, the effects of birefringence on the dispersion relations are found to be minimal. A small effect of the birefringence on the mode attenuation is found.
