Interannual variability of the equatorial Pacific - RevisitedWind-driven modeling results are presented which indicate that a significant portion of the observed interannual sea level variability of the eastern, central equatorial, and western Pacific may be accounted for by linear theory when reasonable estimates of the wind field are provided. It is noted that drastic shoaling of the pycnocline in the western Pacific during El Nino may be induced by Rossby waves that are excited by changes in strength and position of the northeast trades. In the eastern tropical Pacific, remotely forced Kelvin waves generated in the central and western Pacific are responsible for the El Nino pycnocline displacements.
