Prospects for improvement of zonal mean temperatures in the UCLA general circulation modelThe scheme proposed by Katayama for the calculation of long wave radiative cooling rates is described. A number of offline calculations to test the new code were examined. It is suggested that the new scheme should alleviate the model's cold pole problem.
