Ultraviolet flare on Lambda AndromedaeOn November 5, 6, 1982, a luminous, flarelike brightening of the ultraviolet emissions was observed with IUE from the active RS CVn type star Lambda And during the phase of rotation period corresponding to maximum area coverage of the visible hemisphere by starspots and active regions. Enhancements during the flare in the ultraviolet emission lines as large as factors of several and in the ultraviolet continuum up to 80 percent persisted for over 5 hours. The bulk of the radiative output of the flare occurred in Mg II h and k and H I Ly-alpha. Because of the long duration and extreme luminosity of the event, the energy radiated by the flare alone is in excess of 10 to the 35th ergs just in the ultraviolet region. This is the most energetic stellar flare ever recorded in the ultraviolet. In addition, it is the first ultraviolet flare observed from a giant star. In comparison to the largest solar flares, the flare on Lambda And is at least three orders of magnitude more energetic in similar emission lines.
