Assessment of satellite collision hazards by simulated sampling in spaceThe origin and distribution of the tracked population of objects and implications for future missions were examined. The distribution of the tracked population of objects as a function of altitude and orbital inclination are studied. Representative encounter parameters such as the number, relative velocity, and miss distance are determined for circular mission orbits and are used to classify regions of space according to the degree of collision hazard presented. Implications for space shuttle and geosynchronous orbits are examined.
