Compressional environment in the location and orientation of planetary dorsa and terrestrial earthquake fault structuresLunar mare ridges are not pure compressional ridges but their locations and orientations are most likely controlled by shear zones as seen from their Riedel-shear-like arrangements. On the Moon the crustal shortening has mostly taken place within mare areas but some young terra ridges are also to be seen indicating some crustal shortening also outside mare areas. This shortening has, however, not reached the same intensity as in the case of lobate scarp overthrusts on Mercury.
