Theoretical constraints on oxygen and carbon dixoide concentrations in the Precambrian atmosphereTheoretical arguments which bear on the time histories of atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide during the Precambrian are reviewed and extended. It is shown that reasonably tight constraints can be placed on atmospheric pCO2 during the early and late Proterozoic, based on the observation that parts of the earth were glaciated at those times. It is demonstrated that an upper bound on early Proterozoic pO2 can be derived from a simple box model of the atmosphere-ocean system.
