How good is the impedance boundary condition? The impedance boundary condition (IBC) is often used in scattering problems involving material-coated conducting bodies. It is shown that for some commonly encountered coating configurations, the value of the impedance varies significantly as functions of the incident angle and polarization. Hence, the use of IBC in a rigorously formulated problem may affect the accuracy of the final solution.
