Neutron star coupling to its environmentA discussion is undertaken of the outward flow generated by rotation-powered neutron stars, giving attention to the identification of particle, wave, and time-steady EMF components of the flow, the estimation of their densities, and the assessment of their contributions to the global energetics. It is concluded that a firm qualitative understanding of pulsar behavior has been achieved in the matters of magnetospheric structure, pair-production, the fate of large-amplitude waves, and the asymptotic behavior of the wind.
