Periodic weight support effects on rat soleus fibers after hindlimb suspensionThe morphological and histochemical properties of rat soleus muscles were investigated following one week of hindlimb suspension. Short-duration daily weight support activity is shown to ameliorate, but not prevent, soleus atrophy induced by hindlimb suspension. The results indicate that fiber cross-sectional area is more responsive to periodic weight support in dark than light ATPas fibers, and that muscle fiber atrophy need not be associated with a loss in succinate dehydrogenase activity.
