Monitoring seasonal variations of soil moisture and vegetation cover using satellite microwave radiometryThe NIMBUS-7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer measured brightness temperatures at 5 frequencies (6.6, 10.7, 18, 21, 37 GHz), all dual-polarized with a 50 deg incidence angle over Africa since 1978. A 3 yr data set is being processed (1983 to 1985), and a theoretical model was developed, allowing investigation of the microwave emissivity of land features in the frequency range 6.6 to 37 GHz and of the extent to which vegetation and roughness can be determined in order to improve the soil moisture estimation.
