Transportation using spinning tethers with emphasis on phasing and plane changeThis paper studies the potential uses of spinning tethers as components in a transportation system. Additional degrees of freedom in the selection of transfer orbits as well as phasing control are introduced by allowing both the spin rate of the tethers to be controllable and by allowing the ejection and capture points to be anywhere along the tether length. Equations are derived for the phasing of the planar transfer problem. A construction algorithm for nonplanar transfers is developed and nonplanar phasing conditions are examined.
