Energy storage considerations for a robotic Mars surface samplerA Mars Rover capable of obtaining surface samples will need a power system for motive power and to power scientific instrumentation. Several different power systems are considered in this paper along with a discussion of the location options. The weight and volume advantages of the different systems are described for a particular power profile. The conclusions are that a Mars Rover Sample Return Mission and Extended Mission can be accomplished utilizing photovoltaics and electrochemical storage.
