Structural dynamic characteristics of a Space Station Freedom first assembly flight conceptA study has been conducted of the dynamic characteristics of the first flight of NASA's Space Station Freedom and its response to a typical preboost excitation; the FEM model of the structure used encompasses 88 flexible modes below 5 Hz. The low frequency modes of the system are noted to have been dominated by the relatively low stiffness of such components as the photovoltaic arrays, thermal radiators, and alpha joint. The spacecraft backbone-forming truss was stiffer, exhibiting no deformation below 3 Hz. Reboost forcing-function response was moderate.
