Three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation of gamma-ray scattering and production in the atmosphereResults are reported from Monte Carlo numerical simulations of atmospheric gamma-ray scattering and production. The basic physical principles involved in the construction of the models are reviewed, and results are presented in extensive graphs for low-energy gamma rays with the spectra of gamma-ray bursts, solar flares, the Crab pulsar, and 511-keV line radiation. It is shown that the model accurately reproduces the characteristics of atmospheric albedo radiation, including details of the angular distribution. The potential applicability of the Monte Carlo technique to studies of the near-earth radiation environment is indicated.
