An overview of the asteroidsAn introductory overview of the field of asteroid science is presented, with emphasis placed on the accomplishments of the 1980s. Following the survey of known asteroids, attention is given to the observations of asteroids with the IRAS. Particular consideration is given to the origin and evolution of asteroids and their interrelations. Possible future directions of asteroid research are discussed together with the potential of the Hubble Space Telescope for providing new data on asteroid surface chemistry, geology, structure, and morphology.
