Maximum power flux of auroral kilometric radiationDistant observations of intense auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) are discussed in light of the increased maximum AKR power flux registered by the 3D radio-mapping instrument on ISEE 3. Only AKR events that contain the highest frequency signals are selected, and during spacecraft rotation the spacecraft antenna gain is employed to increase the dynamic range of the instrument. The technique is found to result in the screening of false signals created by instrument overloading as well as the detection of genuine second-harmonic AKR signals while the spacecraft was 17 R(E) from earth. A very strong power flux of fundamental AKR is also reported, exceeding 3 x 10 to the -13th W/sq m/Hz at 360 kHz. The most intense source-region values detected by Isis I and Viking measurements are compared to the strong signal, and the signal is concluded to be the combined signal of a number of sources.
