The tracking and data relay satellite system - An historical perspectiveThe Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), NASA's primary communications link between near-earth orbiting spacecraft and the ground, is addressed. The TDRSS supporting elements and their roles are described along with the different phases of the TDRSS life cycle. Users of TDRSS and the extent of support given to them are shown. TDRSS performance is evaluated in terms of availability and service proficiency.
