A reference atmosphere for LAWS trade studies - An updateThe baseline SNR and LOS velocity errors for two proposed Laser Atmospheric Wind Sounder (LAWS) satellite orbits are examined with the aid of a reference atmosphere from the LAWS Simulation Model. It is shown on the basis of a tropical maritime atmosphere that obtaining wind information in the midlevels will be difficult unless better signal processing is possible and/or subvisual cirrus is present. Backscatter probability diagrams for a satellite at 500 and 705 km are presented.
