Exhaust plumes and their interaction with missile airframes - A new viewpointThe present, novel treatment of missile airframe-exhaust plume interactions emphasizes their simulation via a formal solution of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RNS) equation and is accordingly able to address the simulation requirements of novel missiles with nonconventional/integrated propulsion systems. The method is made possible by implicit RNS codes with improved artificial dissipation models, generalized geometric capabilities, and improved two-equation turbulence models, as well as by such codes' recent incorporation of plume thermochemistry and multiphase flow effects.
