Ground test validation of large precision structure through adaptive structuresWithout novel ground validation test (GVT) approaches for such space structures as those contemplated for an orbiting optical interferometer, this and other NASA missions will be stillborn. One such approach may involve the integration of adaptive structures concepts into initial structural designs, in order to accommodate GVT, as well as to allow for redundancy and enhance mission reliability. Adaptive structures are noted to intrinsically relax GVT requirements.
