SIRTF cryo-optics technology planA study was undertaken, early in 1992, to determine if a SIRTF class mission could be developed to allow the Observatory to be launched on an Atlas IIAS rather than the Titan IV/Centaur previously planned. The substantial mass reduction required to make that change resulted in a new set of requirements for science and a heightened interest in light weight optics. This paper addresses the rationale and plan for the Atlas SIRTF cryo-optics technology plan.
