A physical split window technique for the retrieval of precipitable water from satellite measurementsThe split-window precipitable water algorithm developed by Jedlovec (1987) is described, and its advantages are examined. In particular, it is noted that the algorithm can be applied to multispectral imaging data, available half-hourly from VAS; it uses only limited spatial averaging and can be applied to instruments that lack sounding channels. Here, previous work is reviewed, and the procedure is extended to the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and GOES-NEXT using simulated data. Root mean square errors for the simulated and actual retrievals are below +/- 5.8 mm. Of the instruments examined, AVHRR appears to have the greatest potential, with the rms errors below +/- 2.3 mm.
