Dynamics of the 4-day wave - Evidence for instability in the winter upper stratosphereLinear instability calculations are presented to support the contention that part of the excitation of the 4-d wave could be due to baroclinic instability at the winter stratopause. The theoretical structure of this instability is investigated with a linear stability analysis of the August average zonal mean state.
