The spherical probe Electric Field and Wave Experiment for the Cluster missionThe Electric Field and Wave experiment (EFW) on Cluster, which is designed to measure the electric field and density fluctuations with sampling rates, on some occasions, up to 36,000 samples/s in two channels, is decribed. Langmuir sweeps can also be made to determine the electron density and temperature. Among the more interesting objectives of the experiment is to study nonlinear processes that result in acceleration of plasma. Large scale phenomena where all four spacecraft are needed are also studied.
