Modern sources of dust in the solar systemThe observed size-frequency distributions of the main-belt and family asteroids and the results of an analysis of the IRAS data on the zodiacal background and the solar system dustbands were used to estimate the extent of the contribution of asteroidal dust to the zodiacal cloud. It is concluded that the total asteroidal contribution to the zodiacal signal is probably 40% of the total flux. Thus, some 60% of the flux probably derives from a source other than main-belt asteroids.
