Design considerations for a large Airborne Infrared Echelle Spectrometer (AIRES)We propose a new facility instrument, the Airborne Infrared Echelle Spectrometer or 'AIRES'. The scientific rationale, a preliminary optical and mechanical design, and the instrument's estimated performance are presented. Some of the major technical challenges are discussed.
