An infrared astronomer's early vision of airborne astronomy: Paul Merrill 1920The first published paper by a professional, research astronomer which discussed airborne astronomy from airplanes was by Paul W. Merrill. In it he proposed some of the types of observations which might be made, looking up at astronomical objects in the sky. This paper describes Merrill's paper, his education, training and subsequent career, and a few other aspects of the early history of airborne astronomy.
