Rayleigh Convection in a Rotating Magnetic FieldThe onset of steady and time-dependent flows were measured in a cylinder of liquid gallium subjected to a vertical temperature gradient and a horizontal rotating magnetic field (RMF). By varying the applied vertical temperature gradients and the strength of the applied magnetic field, a stability diagram in Rayleigh number - Hartmann number parameter space was constructed. The application of a RMF increased the critical value of the Rayleigh number by up to a factor of 10. However, there was observed a critical value of the Hartmann number where instability set in, regardless of the value of the Rayleigh number. Significant hysteresis in the value of the critical Rayleigh number was observed depending on whether the applied thermal gradient was increasing or decreasing.
