An Altimeter Wind Speed Model Using Both Radar Backscatter and Significant Wave HeightThe development and validation of a new altimeter wind speed model will be presented. This algorithm provides a direct mapping of TOPEX-measured backscatter and significant wave height to 10 m wind speed. A large scatterometer/altimeter crossover data set was assembled to develop the routine and several large ancillary data sets have been assembled for validation purposes. Validation results suggest that this two input routine provides marginal, yet measurable improvements over the standard single-parameter MCW algorithm.
