Developments in Ultra Lightweight Membrane Optical Elements25-micron polymer membranes have been fabricated with optical quality surface properties. Films of up to 17 inches in diameter have been manufactured with rms surface roughness of about 1.5 nanometer and subwavelength thickness variations. Current research is now focusing on figure control of these membrane optical elements.
